Read an S/MIME encrypted mail
You do not need to do anything to read an S/MIME encrypted mail in XgenPlus webmail. Open it as usual and XgenPlus decrypts it with your key. Mail encrypted to an older certificate stays readable after a reissue, because XgenPlus keeps your earlier keys for decryption. The technical signature and encryption files are hidden from the attachment list.
How to read an s/mime encrypted mail
- Open the encrypted mail from your mail list.
- Read it as usual. XgenPlus decrypts it automatically.
When to use it
Last year a client sent Rekha an encrypted contract. She has since reissued her certificate, yet the old mail still opens normally in XgenPlus.
Good to know
- To reply securely, keep Encrypt for recipients on. XgenPlus asks before sending the reply unencrypted.
Common questions
Do I need a passphrase, as with PGP?
No. S/MIME mail opens without a passphrase in webmail. PGP mail asks for your passphrase.
Can I read the mail in Outlook too?
Yes, if you install your certificate there from the .p12 file you export in Settings.
