# Edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files

To edit an Office file, open **Storage**, click the file and choose **Edit**, or create a new one with **+ New**. The document opens in the browser editor with a Word, Excel or PowerPoint style ribbon. Changes save back to the file in Storage. To read an Office attachment in a mail, click **View** next to it instead.

## How to edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files

1. Open **Storage** and click a .docx, .xlsx or .pptx file.
2. Click **Edit** in the viewer.
3. Edit the file using the ribbon at the top.
4. To see earlier versions, open the **File** menu and choose version history.
5. Close the editor when you are done. Your changes are saved to the file in Storage.

## When to use it

> Meera, a compliance officer at acme.in, opens a policy document from Storage, adds comments and tracked changes, and the author accepts them later in the same file.

## Options

| File type | Opens as |
|---|---|
| .docx, .doc, .txt | Document |
| .xlsx, .xls | Spreadsheet |
| .pptx, .ppt | Presentation |
| .pdf | Viewed in the document viewer |

## Good to know

- The editor supports comments, review with tracked changes and version history.
- Several people can work on one file when you send them a collaboration link with edit rights.
- Your administrator turns Office on or off for each domain and user. When it is off, you can still view Office files, but **+ New** document types, **Edit** and **Share for collaboration** are hidden.
- The Office setting for a domain is in the admin console.

## Common questions

**Where is the Office app?**

You work with Office files from Storage. Create files with **+ New**, open existing ones with **Edit**, and read mail attachments with **View**.

**Why can I only view a file and not edit it?**

Office editing is turned off for your account or domain. Ask your administrator to turn on Office.
