# Delete a mail

To delete mail, tick the mails in the list and click **Delete** in the toolbar, or open a mail and click **Delete**, then confirm. Deleted mail goes to **Trash**, which empties automatically after 30 days. Mail removed from Trash can still be recovered from Archive of Deleted Emails within your domain's retention period, 7 days by default.

## How to delete a mail

1. In the mail list, tick the checkbox of each mail you want to delete.
2. Click **Delete** in the toolbar. The mails move to **Trash**.
3. Or open a mail, click **Delete** in the toolbar and click **OK** to confirm.

## When to use it

> Rohit at acme.in gets twenty automated server alerts every morning. After reading them he ticks them all and clicks **Delete**, so his Inbox shows only mail that needs action.

## Good to know

| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Delete from any folder | The mail moves to **Trash**. |
| Delete from **Trash** | The mail leaves Trash. You can still recover it from **Archive of Deleted Emails** within the retention period. |
| Mail in Trash for 30 days | Emptied automatically. |
| Sender stopped deleting (mail rights) | You see a message and the mail stays. |
| Admin switched off deleting for you | The **Delete** button does not appear. |

- If your **On delete** setting is **Mark as delete**, Delete does not move mail. It strikes the mail through instead, and you can undo it until you log out.
- Deleted mail is not gone for good. Your domain keeps it recoverable for its retention period, 7 days by default. Only the server administrator can make it longer. The Mail Rescue Plus Pack gives a longer recovery period.
- To remove every mail from one sender at once, use **Bulk Delete**.

## Common questions

**Why is there no Delete button for me?**

Your administrator can switch off deleting for your account. The **Delete** button is also hidden in **Secure**, in mail shared with you without delete permission, and on broadcast mails from your organisation.

**Can I get back a mail I deleted?**

Yes. While it is in **Trash**, select it and use **Move To** to put it back in a folder. Trash empties after 30 days. After that, or after you empty Trash, open **Archive of Deleted Emails** and restore it within your domain's retention period, 7 days by default.
