# Choose question types

In the form builder, click **Add question** and choose from 13 types: short answer, paragraph, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, yes or no, star rating, linear scale, date, time, email, number and file upload. Click the type button on a question to change it. Turn on **Required** to make an answer compulsory.

## How to choose question types

1. Click **Add question** and choose a type.
2. Type the question, and help text if the answer needs explaining.
3. Set the options for that type, such as the choices, number of stars or allowed file kinds.
4. Switch on **Required** if the question must be answered.
5. Use the arrows, **Duplicate question** or **Delete question** to organise.

## When to use it

> Anita builds a vendor form. Company name is short answer, the services are checkboxes, turnover is a number, and the GST certificate is a PDF file upload. Every question is marked Required except turnover.

## The question types

| File upload | Allowed kinds, most files (1 to 5) and largest file |

## Files

You can allow images (PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP), PDF, Word (.docx) and Excel (.xlsx). Free allowance files are up to 1 MB each, and Forms Plus allows up to 2 MB. All files and answers in one submission can add up to 10 MB. People cannot attach programs or macro files.

## Good to know

- Each question can have a title up to 300 characters and help text.
- The builder warns you if a title, help text or option asks for a password, PIN, OTP or card number.

## Common questions

**Can I change a question's type later?**

Yes. Click the type button on the question and pick another. Title, help text and the Required setting are kept, and choices are kept when you switch between multiple choice, checkboxes and dropdown.

**Why do I not see File upload?**

File upload is shown only when your plan allows it. On the free allowance, files can come from people with an XgenPlus email address. Opening a form with a file question to anyone needs Forms Plus.
