# MCP tools for organising mail

Organising tools change mail you choose. `mark_messages` marks mail read or unread and stars or unstars it. `move_messages` moves mail to the inbox, spam or one of your folders. `trash_messages` moves mail to Trash, and `restore_messages` brings it back. Nothing is ever permanently deleted, and assistants are told to ask you before trashing anything.

## When to use it

> Rohit asks, "Mark all newsletters from this week as read and move vendor mail to my Vendors folder." The assistant finds them with `search_messages`, then runs `mark_messages` and `move_messages` with their `mail_id` values.

## Tools

| Tool | Arguments | Permission | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| `mark_messages` | `mail_ids` (required), `read` (true or false), `starred` (true or false) | Mark read/unread | 100 per call |
| `move_messages` | `mail_ids`, `to_folder` (inbox, spam or f_ number), both required | Move email | 100 per call |
| `trash_messages` | `mail_ids` (required) | Delete email | 50 per call |
| `restore_messages` | `mail_ids` (required), `to_folder` (optional) | Move email | 100 per call |

## Good to know

- Each tool reports what changed (`updated`, read back from the mailbox) and what did not (`skipped`, with a reason).
- `restore_messages` returns mail to where it was, unless you give a folder.
- Your own folders are named `f_` followed by a number. `list_folders` shows them.

## Common questions

**Can the assistant empty my Trash?**

No. There is no tool for permanent deletion. Trash can always be restored.

**Some messages were skipped. Why?**

Write tools report skipped messages with a reason, such as already in that folder, or the sender restricted deleting the message.
