# Check a group for dead email addresses

To check a group, open **Contacts** and click the validate (tick) icon next to the group under **List Of Groups**. XgenPlus asks each recipient's mail server whether the address exists, without sending any mail, and shows a status for each one. Then click **Disable all Invalid Contacts** or **Delete all Invalid Contacts**, or fix addresses one by one.

## How to check a group for dead email addresses

1. Open **Contacts** from the top bar.
2. Under **List Of Groups**, click the validate icon next to the group.
3. Wait while each address is checked.
4. Click **Disable all Invalid Contacts** or **Delete all Invalid Contacts**, or change the status of single addresses.

## When to use it

> Before the quarterly newsletter, Meera in marketing checks the CUSTOMERS-2019 group. 62 mailboxes no longer exist, so she disables them and keeps bounces away from acme.in's sending reputation.

## Options

| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Status per address | Set it to **Invalid**, **Enable**, **Disable** or **Delete**. |
| Edit address | Correct a mistyped address in the list. |
| **Disable all Invalid Contacts** | Keeps the contacts but leaves them out of group mail. |
| **Delete all Invalid Contacts** | Removes every address found invalid. |

## Good to know

- No mail is sent to the contacts during the check.
- It works on groups shared with you too.
- A large group takes longer, because each address is checked with its own mail server.
